Driving Licence Translation for Dubai RTA

English driving licence? Do not translate it. Dubai RTA accepts an English licence as-is for language purposes. Translation is for a licence written in another language, after the RTA route and requirement are confirmed.

An English licence still has to be valid and you must still meet the eligibility and document requirements for your RTA application. “No translation needed” removes only the translation step; it does not guarantee that the licence can be exchanged.

Dubai Emirates ID Required

Your Emirates ID must be issued in Dubai to convert at Dubai RTA. If your Emirates ID shows Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, or another emirate, you must convert through that emirate’s authority instead. This is the most common reason for RTA file opening rejection.

Why Dubai RTA File Openings Get Rejected

The most common rejection is an Emirates ID mismatch. Your ID must show Dubai as the issuing emirate. Sharjah or Ajman residents working in Dubai cannot use Dubai RTA for conversion. Name mismatches between license and passport cause delays. We verify your Emirates ID emirate before processing your translation.

Approved Countries for Direct Conversion

Dubai RTA allows direct licence exchange for eligible countries and applicants. If the licence is in English, use it as-is; do not order translation. If it is in another language, confirm whether legalised translation is listed for that issuing country before paying.

We first check whether translation is needed. English licence holders stop there and pay nothing for translation. For a non-English licence, we confirm scope before starting. Eye tests and RTA submission remain separate.

Drivers who are not eligible for direct exchange may need RTA driving school and testing. If their licence is in English, it does not need translation. For another language, confirm the file-opening requirement with RTA or the selected driving school.

The Emirates ID Rule That Catches People Off Guard

Dubai RTA will only process your license conversion if your Emirates ID is Dubai-issued. This is the single most common rejection reason we see. Residents who live in Sharjah, Ajman, or Umm Al Quwain but work in Dubai cannot convert at Dubai RTA.

Check the issuing emirate on your Emirates ID before visiting RTA. If it shows any emirate other than Dubai, you must convert through that emirate’s traffic authority instead. We verify this when you send us your documents.

Approved Countries for Direct Conversion at Dubai RTA

Dubai RTA allows direct license conversion for holders from these countries:

GCC Countries: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar

Europe: United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Turkey

Americas: United States, Canada

Asia Pacific: Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand

Other: South Africa

Countries Requiring the Driving Test in Dubai

If your country is not on the approved list, you need driving lessons and the RTA test. Common nationalities requiring testing include:

• India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka
• Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam
• Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria
• Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia
• China (Mainland)
• Most South American countries

Experienced drivers may qualify for a route based on RTA’s current assessment. Present an English licence as-is; translate a non-English licence only when the applicable route requires it.

Dubai RTA Centers by Area

Dubai has three main RTA service centers that process license conversions. Each center has nearby typing centers and opticians for a streamlined experience.

Deira RTA Center (Al Ittihad Road) — The largest RTA service center in Dubai. Located on Al Ittihad Road near Deira City Centre. This center handles the highest volume of license conversions and has the most typing centers nearby. Convenient for residents of Deira, Bur Dubai, and Creek-area neighbourhoods.

Al Barsha RTA Center — Located near Mall of the Emirates in Al Barsha. This center serves residents of Dubai Marina, JLT, Barsha, and the surrounding areas. Typing centers and opticians are located within walking distance. Generally less crowded than Deira.

Umm Ramool RTA Center — Situated near Dubai International Airport. This center is convenient for residents of Ras Al Khor, Mirdif, and communities near the airport. It offers the same license conversion services as the other centers but with shorter wait times during off-peak hours.

RTA Smart App Process

Dubai RTA offers some license services through the RTA Smart App. You can check your application status, pay fees, and schedule appointments through the app. However, the initial file opening for license conversion still requires an in-person visit to an RTA center.

After your file is opened, the app allows you to:

• Track your application progress
• Pay outstanding fees
• Book driving test appointments (for non-approved countries)
• Receive notifications when your license is ready

Common Rejection Reasons at Dubai RTA

• Emirates ID from wrong emirate: Your ID must show Dubai as the issuing emirate. Sharjah, Ajman, or any other emirate means you cannot use Dubai RTA.
• Expired eye test certificate: The eye test must be current at the time of submission. Get the eye test on the same day or the day before your RTA visit.
• Name mismatch: Where translation is required, the translated name must match the passport. An English licence is submitted as-is.
• Missing licence categories: Where translation is required, every visible category and restriction must be represented.

• Tourist visa: License conversion requires a valid UAE residence visa. Visitors on tourist visas cannot convert their foreign license.

Translation Timeline vs RTA Timeline

English licence: no translation timeline. Use the licence as-is for language purposes and follow RTA’s remaining steps.

Non-English licence translation: Timing begins only after we confirm translation is needed. Standard and urgent delivery options are shown on the pricing page.

Your RTA process: Timing and application channels depend on current RTA rules and your eligibility. Check the official RTA service before visiting.

Driving-school route: If testing is required, the selected school and RTA control the schedule. English licences still need no translation.

License Categories That Can Be Converted

When a non-English licence does require translation, the translation includes every category on the original:

• Category 1/A (Motorcycle): Convertible from approved countries. Engine size restrictions carry over.
• Category 2/B (Light Vehicle): The most common conversion. Automatic-only restriction carries over if present.
• Category 3/C (Heavy Vehicle): Additional employer documentation may be required.
• Category 4/D (Bus): Requires employment proof with a passenger transport company.
• Automatic vs Manual: Manual license holders get unrestricted UAE licenses. Automatic-only holders receive the automatic restriction.

Expired Licenses at Dubai RTA

Translation does not make an expired licence valid. Confirm current acceptance rules directly with RTA before ordering any translation.

• Expired less than 6 months: Usually accepted without question
• Expired 6 months to 2 years: May be accepted with proof of renewal in progress
• Expired more than 2 years: Typically requires fresh license from home country

If your license is close to expiry, consider converting before it lapses. This avoids additional paperwork.

International Driving Permit vs translation

An International Driving Permit is not the document used to decide whether the national licence needs translation. If the national licence is in English, present it as-is for language purposes. For another language, check the applicable RTA requirement.
