Do You Need a Court Interpreter in Dubai?

The right first step is not to book the nearest bilingual person. Identify the forum, case or appointment, exact language and dialect, then ask the court or your lawyer how the interpreter will be appointed or accepted. The answer differs between mainland civil proceedings, police or criminal matters, and the DIFC Courts.

Court language rules at a glance

These are procedural rules, not a promise that a privately booked interpreter will be admitted. The court or authority remains the decision-maker.

Court-arranged or privately booked?

Start with the hearing notice, case portal or your lawyer. Ask one precise question: Who is arranging language support for this proceeding, and what must I do now?

If the answer is unclear, use the current Dubai Courts contact centre and provide the case number rather than asking a generic service question. Dubai Courts also publishes a translator directory, but a directory listing is not proof that a person has been assigned to or accepted for your hearing. Verify the current entry and the appointment directly.

Do not pay a private interpreter, add them to a remote hearing, or send a full case file until the court or your legal representative confirms the route. This avoids booking a capable professional whom the proceeding will not admit.

Interpreter and legal translator are not two legal licence categories

The work is different: an interpreter renders speech as it happens, while a translator prepares written text. Assignment skill matters. But UAE federal law defines the regulated translation profession broadly enough to include written, oral and sign-language translation. It is therefore misleading to say that UAE law always treats “translator” and “interpreter” as unrelated professions.

For court-filed written documents, the same law generally requires the translation to come from a translator or translation house listed by the Ministry of Justice, subject to the law’s judicial exceptions. That written-document rule does not appoint someone to interpret at a hearing.

What to send when requesting interpretation

Send a short, complete brief:

• court, police station, prosecution office or DIFC forum;
• case, report or appointment reference;
• hearing or interview date, time, location and remote link if applicable;
• whether the person is a party, witness or another participant;
• exact spoken language and dialect, not nationality alone;
• names, case terminology and any preparation material the authority permits you to share;
• the court’s written instruction about appointment, approval or access, if available.

If the event is remote, also confirm which platform is used, who sends the access link and whether the interpreter joins as an invited participant. UAE criminal procedure expressly permits remote procedures, but that does not create a self-service right to add a private interpreter.

Written evidence is a separate workstream

An interpreter helps a person follow and answer during a proceeding. A written translator prepares pleadings, exhibits, messages, contracts or judgments in the required language. One does not replace the other.

Before the hearing, ask your lawyer or the registry:

• which documents need Arabic or English translation;
• whether the whole document or only identified extracts are required;
• which provider credential and format are accepted;
• whether originals, attestations or certified copies are also needed; and
• how translated exhibits must be filed or served.

For digital evidence such as messages or recordings, confirm the evidential format before ordering transcription or translation. A readable translation is not automatically a court-ready exhibit.

Requesting a private interpretation quote
